Fashion & Communication: Inspiration From Fargo Monthly Editor, Alexandra Martin

Inspired by the latest episode of Find Your Style.

Alexandra Martin Fargo Monthly

A recent graduate of an all women's college, Alexandra attended Stephens College in Missouri where she received her BFA fashion communion. Shortly after graduation she and her now fiancé found out they were relocating to the Fargo-Moorhead area. It was that move which challenged Alexandra to think of fashion and style in a whole new way. Here she shares her insight on style along with what she's learned moving to a new community and embracing life in the Bold North. Read as she talks about how she inspires and is inspired by both fashion and communication in Fargo, North Dakota.

A Life In Style

Alexandra brings her insight and knowledge on fashion to the community. For me she's personally  been an asset to helping the flow of multiple style shoots we've been a part of together. For Alexandra, being on set is one of her favorite parts of the industry.

"Being around the energy, planning and doing stuff and being around creative people and you can't replicate the feeling that's going on."

Alexandra Martin Stephens College Fashion Show

Stevens College Fashion Show- Every year she was at Stephens College she participated in their annual fashion show, showcasing designs made by students.

She explains that fashion events and shoots are a team effort. During a shoot you have models, you have stylists, you have a photographer and you have the set. Everyone had their place and everyone had equal parts of creativity. This reminded me that there are so many aspects to the fashion industry. Each part is vital and has key rolls to bring to life everything from an artistic fashion movement, to producing a runway show, to marketing a collection.

Transitioning to Fargo

Alexandra Martin

Alexandra dabbled in modeling and although her career path took her elsewhere, she had so much fun. It taught her the other side of the industry- what it is like in front of the camera, but also what goes on on all the other sides.

While living in New York Alexandra expressed that it was second nature to be aware of fashion and style, because it's everywhere you look. It's hard not to be exposed to it. She's embraced the opportunity to find it and celebrating it in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

Shortly after Alexandra finished up her degree in fashion when she and her now fiancé found out they were relocating to the Fargo-Moorhead area. After exploring the culture in the area, Alexandra realized that there is a lively environment and people enthusiastic about fashion and style.

"There's so much fashion and style that's different than New York and Chicago but fashion is still fashion, and personal style is still personal style. It's been really interesting  getting to see what is here and how I can adapt and embrace it."

Fun, Fearless & Fargo Monthly

It was like it was meant to be when Alexandra got the job as editor of Fargo Monthly. She explained to me that each month the publication creates the issue around a specific theme. It just so happened that fashion and shopping was the theme of the very first issue she worked on.

"It felt like a natural start for me"
-Alexandra Martin

The feature story of her first issue, "Who What Wear" tells the story of fashion-forward community members through the clothes in their closets. Her biggest ah-ha moment about writing the story was the diversity of everyones approach to fashion.

"We're all talking about fashion, style and presenting ourselves, but everyones approach to it is so different."

I had the honor of being a part of the article, which is when I got to know Alexandra. It's been a joy to get to know her and hear her journey.

As the editor of Fargo Monthly, Alexandra focuses on growing her skills in not only fashion communication, but communication within the local culture . She wants to connect with her audience on an authentic, relatable level.

She continues to learn, grow and find her fit into the culture every day. Be sure to keep your eyes open for what she's up to with each publication of Fargo Monthly!
